A Savant is any person (of superior, average, or minimal intelligence) with brilliance, knowledge, or skill in a single area. An Idiot Savant (archaic and derogatory term, like "retard") is a savant who is also mentally retarded (the medical term for someone with a low IQ, typically below 70). The latter term is so 1929. Using the two terms interchangeably is an error that implies that anyone showing above-average skill or knowledge in a given area can be demeaned as defective. This is simply not accurate. You can be a genius and not be mentally retarded. You can be gifted without being defective.

Depends on how much effort you put into it. A photographic memory would probably count, yes. However, there are lots of people who memorize e.g. the entire Koran, but take lots of lots of time studying in order to do that. That would not count. If you are able to memorize complete textbooks, are you considered a savant?
A savant is a moron who can do one thing really well. What you are talking about is having a photographic memory.
