Do universities always use the newest edition of textbooks?

Trying to buy my textbooks for school but my school won't provide the isbn number. Don't want to get the wrong book. Do most universities change their books every time a new edition comes out?Do universities always use the newest edition of textbooks?
For my school, it always use the latest edition of textbook. However, I still suggest you to check with the lecturer to see which edition is needed. There can be quite some difference between two editions.

When you get your book, you better check the price on Amazon. They often offer good discount:

No. For example, I have two classes this semester which require the same book, but different editions. I just bought the older edition because it was cheaper. Generally, it doesn't matter which edition you have as the newer editions are just a way for bookstores and publishers to make more money (not as many used copies, if any). So, typically it does not matter what edition you buy.Do universities always use the newest edition of textbooks?
It depends on the teacher. If you go to the bookstore on campus, pick out your books, write down the ISBN and then put them back you can order for hundreds cheaper on Amazon. thats what I did every semester.
