What are some cheaper alternatives to textbooks for homeschooling?

Not interested in online schooling.

Or,, is there anywhere to buy used textbooks for cheaper? ThanksWhat are some cheaper alternatives to textbooks for homeschooling?
You can find used textbooks online. I always start with bookfinder.com which list them from a lot of sources including used on Amazon.

Libraries have ebooks, even textbooks. We used a biology one last year. You download it, and it is yours to keep.

Look on Amazon and when you find the text, see if there is an older edition. You can usually find one a few years older than the schools use, for a few dollars! Then match up workbooks and teacher guides available used (unused though!).

Or don't use textbooks at all. Read a novel and write essays, contrast them to the movie, take quizzes you find online. Do hands-on science experiments and demonstrations.

If you want a foreign language try livemocha or our library has Mango.

History can be non-fiction from the library, or archeology magazines.

There are some fun ones on universalclass.com. Don't pay for the certificate, there is an option not to and it is cheaper. You can sign up for an entire year of unlimited classes for 189.00.
In general, textbooks are geared toward learning in a traditional classroom setting and aren't compatible with homeschooling, especially if you are an older student hoping to be self directed for most of your schooling. Due to this, I prefer materials made specifically for homeschooling. Most of the below items are in the $10-$30 range with the exception of teaching textbooks for math (which is IMHO well worth the $180). I have not included courses we were not happy with unless I have an explanations included. Links are not provided with each individual item and some links are separated by a space due to YA's restrictions on number of links allowed in a single answer.

Science:

Great Science Adventures- http://www.commonsensepress.com/greatsci鈥?/a>

Power Basics Chemistry (order from rainbow resource center linked below). The textbook is a bit more rigorous than described. It is a good course but was a bit advanced by my 6th grader.

A lot of textbook companies sell the PDF file of the textbook so you can view it on a computer, tablet, smartphone or print a couple pages at a time. I homeschool and I use the PDF textbooks. What are some cheaper alternatives to textbooks for homeschooling?
