Typically the bookstores around universities don't start selling books until classes start. But if you already know who your professors are, you can email them and ask them what textbooks you'll need. If you do this a few weeks before classes begin, you can purchase your books on a website such as Amazon and save yourself hundreds of dollars.

Listamillion.com classified ads is a wonderful site for buying and selling cheap items such as college textbooks. I was in need of cheap textbooks and while I was doing a search, I ran across listamillion.com. I was definitely impressed with the selection of items on the site. There are so many people that are selling their stuff on sites like these for cheaper prices because they just want to get rid of these textbooks and get some money to buy more books for the next semester. You can start buying textbooks as soon as you know which ones you will need. Once you figure that out start looking online for them, because they will ALWAYS be cheaper than the campus bookstore. Also there is this textbook search engine called Bigwords.com which searches all the online retailers for you and ensures that you will get the best price that way.

You should be certain that you will be taking the class before you buy the books online, unless it is easy to return the books for a full refund if you end up not taking the class. Some reasons students do not to take a class is that they go to the first meeting of it and find out that it is not what they need or want, and that the class may become full before the student has a chance to sign up for it. Also, it may turn out that you do not need to own all the assigned books because only one or two chapters are going to be used and the book is available in the reserve section of the library.
